NSA confers the CAE-R designation to Florida State University

April 20, 2009

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) has announced that Florida State University is a recipient of their newly created National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research (CAE-R) designation. The CAE-R designation is a renewable five-year designation established to give formal recognition to universities whose outstanding graduate research programs in the field of Information Assurance demonstrate significant impact. Areas measured include engagement in Information Assurance (IA) research initiatives, community service and outreach, production of graduate-level students, student-based research in IA, faculty activity in current IA practice and research, contributions to IA literature, and related research funding received by the university.

The Center for Security and Assurance in Information Technology (C-SAIT) was established in 2000. Its mission is to serve as a focal point for members of different academic disciplines, government, and industry, to carry out world-class research and to advance the practice and public awareness of information technology security and assurance through education and public service. The Center provides an environment that fosters world-class, applied research in information security technology, with a focus on innovation and learning. C-SAIT supplies equipment and space to support graduate level, hands-on research in information security. It also provides a framework for establishing relationships with industry. The CAE-R designation acknowledges this contribution.

The CAE-R program has been created as an enhancement to NSA's existing National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) program, which recognizes universities that offer students outstanding programs of academic coursework in information assurance. FSU has held a CAEIAE designation since 2000. The CAEIAE/CAE-R program is jointly sponsored by the NSA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in support of the President's National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace.

According to NSA's website: “the goal of the CAE-R program is to increase our understanding of robust IA technology, policy, and practices that will enable our Nation to effectively prevent or respond to a catastrophic cyber event. This program will significantly contribute to the advancement of state-of-the-art IA knowledge and practice.”
